So, how did I get started?
I’m glad you asked!
How To Make Money Online In 2021.
Short answer: Low Content Publishing
Long Answer:
You might have heard somewhere that writing a book and publishing it through KDP makes a great business opportunity, and I agree with that, but let’s be honest here, writing 30,000 words books is not an easy task, and even if you can somehow make that happen, formatting and editing your book’s content can take many months to complete.
but what if I told you that you don’t need to do any of that, and instead; you can start what we call “low content publishing” and still get the same rewards that regular publishing gives you.
Here’s How:
Firstly, I wanna clarify what is KDP & how you can earn money with low content publishing.
What is KDP?
Amazon KDP stands for Amazon Kindle Direct Publishing. It was originally launched a little over 14 years ago in 2007, allowing authors to take a different route from the traditional publishing means and release their books independently without any upfront costs.
Traditional publishing was what most book authors opted for for one main reason: they had no other choice.
This took them a lot of time & money because they had to find a publishing house that could help them print their books and sell them with the help of other sales channels like bookstores and libraries.
KDP on the other hand, saved time for authors by allowing them to self-publish books without the hassle of going through a publishing house and money by relying on a Print On Demand system which basically meant that book copies were printed and shipped only after a customer makes an order.
This also allowed authors to capitalize on Amazon’s customer base. Which is ridiculously large.
Up until 2016, you needed to use a platform called Createspace to be able to publish a book on Amazon. However, in 2017, Createspace was merged into KDP and you can now publish a book directly through the Kindle Direct Publishing dashboard.
What is Low Content Publishing?
Low content Publishing is the process of publishing books with little to no content in the book. An example of this would be notebooks, lined journals cookbooks, planners, logbooks, etc...
Now, why is it a good idea to publish low-content books on Amazon?
Amazon was originally founded on selling books, it was all they sold up until 1998; if that isn’t enough for you, Amazon also accounts for about 67% of ebook sales and 50% of all book sales in the US alone, to put that into perspective, Amazon sold almost 350 million print book copies last year alone.
Now that that’s out of the way, how can you get started with low content publishing?
Disclaimer: This isn’t a get-rich-quick scheme, this actually takes time to build, and success in it heavily depends on the amount of work you can put in.
Remember how I said earlier that low content publishing consists of publishing books with little to no content?
Here’s how you can actually do that.
What do you need to get started?
- Research Abilities
- Amazon KDP Account
- Basic design skills
- No & Low Content Book Interiors
Research (The foundation of your KDP business)
While Amazon has a large customer base, if you don’t know what they want to buy and what they don’t want to, you’ll start publishing a few books, get no sales, and immediately quit.
To figure out what people want to buy, you’ll have to do some research first:
this is not complicated, all you need to do is look at what people are already buying, for example, if you search for Graph paper notebook on Amazon, you’ll find a few publishers with 100s if not 1000s of reviews, which proves that there is high demand for this type of notebook.
Do you see the first listing on the left? that’s a low content book.
How do I know?
Well, because there is nothing on the listing’s image but a flat book cover.
Most books published on kdp only have two listing images and look something like this:
Looking at the number of reviews a book has is not enough to know if it is in demand or not, instead, we use something called a best-sellers rank or BSR.
It can be found in the book details section in the middle of the product page:
The lower the number is, the better, so the #1 book outsold the #2 book, etc…
Generally a BSR of 200,000 means that the book has sold at least 1 copy in the last hour.
It can be quite confusing right now, but the more you dive into it, the easier it will be to estimate the number of sales just by using the BSR.
Ok, but you’ll ask me now, how can I find the types of books I can sell?
I will show you the strategy that I personally use, just follow with me:
First, you wanna visit a low content publisher’s author page, it should look somewhat like this:
Now that you’re here, all you’ve got to do is note down the titles of all the books this author has published.
After you find these book ideas or niches, you can move on to the next part.
KDP Keyword Research
Keyword research is the process of finding phrases or words that customers use to search for a specific product in mind and using certain metrics like search volume & number of search results to determine which keywords are better.
Now that you know what keyword research is.
Let’s say I want to publish a graph paper notebook on amazon KDP, when I’m doing my keyword research, I’ll try to find search phrases with low competition and high demand; an example of that would be “graph paper notebook for kids”
To find these types of keywords, you can go to the Amazon search bar, type in your seed keyword, in this case, that’ll be “graph paper notebook”, and go through each search phrase amazon auto-completed.
The metric you can use to determine good keywords are:
- Search results (The lower the better, preferably under 1,000 search results)
- Search volume (I use amalyze, a free extension you can download on your browser to get this data; for this metric, the higher the better)
Now that you’ve got the niche & keywords, all that’s left to do is get an interior and design a cover.
Low Content Interiors
Finding interiors is now easier than ever, many sites offer them for free, here is a list of all the ones I know of:
- Creative Fabrica Freebies
- Bookbolt’s interior wizard
- Bookbird’s free beginner interior pack
So in my case when trying to publish a graph paper notebook, I can get my interior through bookbolt.
Here’s how to do it.
- Go to bookbolt.io.
- Then next, go to the interior wizard.
- Once you’re in the interior wizard, Find the “graph paper 4x4” option and click on it.
- Then select your book size. I’m gonna go with 8.5" x 11" (all competitors it).
- Enter your page count (100 to 120 is a good place to start).
- Pick the bleed option, always pick bleed for notebook and lined journals.
- Once you’re done, click the download button.
Book Covers
This is one of the most complicated parts of this whole process, I’ll try to go through it in as much detail as possible.
Ok so now that you’ve got your interior, you wanna go to “Bookow” for a cover template, once you’re on their website, click on the “kdp cover template generator” link.
After that enter the width, height, and page count of your book, then your email address and click the “email cover template” button.
So for my case, it would look like this:
Then go to your e-mail address and download the cover template, it should look like this:
Once you have your cover template downloaded, go to Photoshop, Gimp, or any photo editor you know of; like Canva, etc…
Here is a tutorial on youtube by Ryan Hogue that you can follow along with:
After finishing all of this, your book is ready to be uploaded, you will first have to complete the kdp registration, here is a tutorial for that:
and then you can follow along with this tutorial to upload your book:
Conclusion:
KDP is an excellent opportunity right now, and everything you learned about low content publishing here can be used to leverage the insanely huge amazon customer base.
If you made it to the very end, I really appreciate it and I wanna thank you for allowing me to share this with you!
Please excuse my writing skills, this is my 2nd ever blog post after publishing a 300 words one, and being a non-native English speaker doesn’t help the situation at all :-)!
Have a nice day!
